Vertigo and Upper Cervical Chiropractic
What is vertigo? It is the feeling that motion is present when there is none. This is commonly related to the feeling of uncontrollable dizziness. Often a vertigo sufferer may feel the room is spinning, even if nothing is moving at all. For some, this feeling may last only seconds to minutes. For others, it can last hours. In more severe cases, the sensation is strong enough to cause nausea and even vomiting.
So how can my spine affect vertigo symptoms. To start, our control center for balance is a system of nerves that travel between the ear and the top of the spine. When this nerve network is affected in any way, the signals being sent between them are going to be affected as well. If the nerves are affected in just the right way, we feel a sense of spinning, dizziness, or vertigo.
Since these highly important nerves relay information to the top of the spine, it is often found that a problem or misalignment of the upper cervical spine is the culprit. So how does the upper cervical spine misalign? The most common mechanism is an accident or injury that created a weakening of the connective tissue which holds the upper cervical spine in proper place. When this happens, the head no longer rests on the center point of the top spinal vertebra known as the Atlas.
For many people, the vertigo symptoms of dizziness and spinning do not begin immediately or even shortly after an accident to the head or neck. It is more common that this problem takes years to develop into vertigo. However, it is still the misalignment at the top of the cervical spine which is causing the problem.
How can Upper Cervical Chiropractic – NUCCA Chiropractic Help my Vertigo?
Your Upper Cervical Chiropractor or NUCCA Chiropractor starts by performing a detailed spinal analysis and postural assessment to identify the cause of the vertigo. Chiropractic researchers have found upper cervical misalignment to be one of the most common causes of vertigo. Thus if the evaluation shows evidence of a spinal misalignment, your NUCCA Chiropractor will take specific X-rays of the spine in order to identify the severity of the misalignment and exactly how it needs to be corrected.
The NUCCA chiropractor will then use this detailed X-ray information to perform a gentle and precise spinal correction. The NUCCA adjustment is designed to restore spinal alignment, removing stress and irritation between the nerves of the head and upper neck. The nerves in this area are the same nerves which create the feeling of vertigo. Once the misalignment is corrected, the spine and spinal nerves begin to heal and recover. Depending on how long the problem has been there, many people feel improvement in vertigo symptoms in only a few treatments.
